1st year in university - asking for some advice on researching ibanking
Hey guys,
I'm just 18 and in my first year at the University of Toronto majoring in economics/finance (pursuing a Bachelor of Commerce degree) and I am wondering what good books are available on investment banking?
I'd like to research the field and get accustomed to it so I have a bit of an advantage while I'm still young.
My marks are strong at the moment, and I'm focusing on some solid extra curricular activities to build my resume come time I apply for positions. I basically have 4 years to make myself a competitive applicant, so any advice while I'm miles away from my destination would be greatly appreciated!
What is the best way I can talk with current investment bankers - get some advice, build relationships and better my chances of eventually getting into the field?
Thanks,
Cipriani.
EDIT (additional info): I am also looking to transfer to a more finance focused school in the US. My ambitions are high; such as Cornell, NYU and Berkeley. Some advice/information on what those schools (and other highly accredited schools alike) look for with regards to their transfer applicants would also be greatly appreciated.
Vault Guide. Ask your career center. Also, concentrate on keeping those marks as high as possible - extracurriculars are less important for your resume. Get career center info on U of T alumni that are in banking and contact them with intelligent questions about your interest in banking (do this after you've done some research and have a good understanding of the field). It's good that your starting to think about this early. Remember, high marks (3.6+) are the most important thing to concentrate on by far at your stage.
i agree keep your gpa high will help in getting interviews and if you try and transfer. be involved in activities outside of class -doesnt have to be finance related--just want to show you can do more than just get high grades
I'd also recommend making the most out of your summers. Look for internships after your 1st year, don't wait until you're a sophomore or a junior. Having a large number of internships with solid companies allowed a couple of people I know to overcome low GPAs and obtain solid jobs.
What specific internships should I look for and what is the best way to go about looking for them? Apart from internships, what other extra curricular activities do they like to see?
Thanks.
