3 months’ notice in the UK as analyst
Hi guys,
I am currently working on the buyside and want to go back to banking for financial reason. I have a 3 month notice period and do not know how that will be perceived or whether it would stop me from getting hired. I am targeting senior analyst/associate 1 roles.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, having a 3-month notice period can indeed be a challenge when transitioning roles, especially in competitive fields like banking. Recruiters and hiring managers may view it as a potential delay in filling their immediate needs. However, there are strategies to navigate this:
Be Transparent but Strategic: Some WSO threads suggest initially downplaying the notice period. For example, you could indicate that your notice period is shorter (e.g., 2 weeks) during initial discussions. Once you secure an offer, you can clarify the actual notice period and work with the new employer to manage the transition.
Negotiate with Your Current Employer: If possible, try to negotiate a shorter notice period with your current employer. While this might signal your intention to leave, it could also demonstrate professionalism if handled tactfully.
Highlight Your Value: Emphasize your skills, experience, and the immediate value you can bring to the new role. If the hiring team sees you as a strong candidate, they may be willing to wait for the notice period to lapse.
Target Roles with Flexibility: Some firms may be more accommodating of longer notice periods, especially for senior analyst or associate roles. Focus on firms that value long-term fit over immediate availability.
Leverage Networking: Use your network to connect with hiring managers directly. A personal recommendation or connection can often help bypass concerns about notice periods.
Ultimately, while a 3-month notice period can be a hurdle, it’s not insurmountable. By being proactive and strategic, you can position yourself as a strong candidate despite the delay.

All banks have two months Notice - why the hell do you have three months?
in H/F world it is like 6month - if you move to a direct competitor then 1 year so do not worry,
Banks have two weeks notice and you're not even expected to work during your notice period
This is about London, so it is not 2 weeks
What type of bank are yall working at, BBs are 2 weeks last time I checked
Can’t advise on the specifics, but 3 months notice in the UK is very standard for finance professionals, the exception is grads/people with 0-2 years experience who typically have a 1 month notice.
For the UK standard notice period for analysts is 1 month in IBD. Buyside standard is 3 for analyst / assoc. best way to go about it is be upfront from early on in the process and use it as a reason to make the process move fast. Explain that you are keen to do interviews and are available at short notice and want to progress fast so that you can start asap (headhunter will help get this across)
