Based on previous WSO threads, it's not typical to have a 3-week internship in investment banking, as most internships tend to be longer to allow for substantial learning and contribution. However, here are some tips to make the most out of a short internship:

  1. Maximize Learning Opportunities:

    • Engage Actively: Be proactive in seeking out tasks and responsibilities. Show enthusiasm and willingness to learn.
    • Ask Questions: Don't hesitate to ask questions to understand the work better and show your interest.
  2. Network Effectively:

    • Build Relationships: Use the short time to network with as many people as possible. Attend meetings, lunches, and any social events.
    • Stay Connected: After the internship, keep in touch with the contacts you made. This can help in future job searches.
  3. Showcase Your Skills:

    • Deliver Quality Work: Even in a short period, focus on delivering high-quality work. This can leave a lasting impression.
    • Highlight Your Contributions: Make sure your contributions are visible. Document your work and share it with your supervisors.
  4. Seek Feedback:

    • Request Feedback: Ask for feedback on your performance. This can help you improve and also shows that you are keen on personal development.
  5. Plan for the Future:

    • Leverage the Experience: Use this internship as a stepping stone. Highlight it on your resume and discuss it in future interviews.
    • Look for Longer Opportunities: Continue applying for longer internships or full-time positions, using this experience to strengthen your applications.

By following these steps, you can make the most out of a short internship and set yourself up for future success.

What kind of shop is this at? And is this a junior year summer internship?

If this isn't a junior year summer internship, and it's more of a connection, yeah sure take the experience and ask if you can stay on longer.

If it is, well then ask if you can still convert. If not, something is better than nothing, and you better full time recruit like crazy.

I'm a fresh grad from a non-target school that majored in finance. And sure I got a referral in order to get the first interview. But I aced all the interviews, and in the end I only got 3 weeks because of a hiring freeze. Given my situation, what do u advise me to do?

More of a shadowing experience rather than an internship. I would do well and then ask if there's any possibility to stay longer because you're learning so much

If this is a freshman internship, it's kind of whatever - if this is a junior year internship I would be concerned and try to get something to fill your time after (or for the fall)
