3.1 GPA Target
What's up guys, I'm a sophomore at a target school with a 3.16 gpa; I transferred from another school so I don't have another gpa. I'm studying finance and got absolutely wrecked in some of my classes. Most banks are out of the picture, but what is my plan of action now. I was shooting for above a 3.5 but now with what I have, I feel discouraged from networking and even this career. Any thoughts or advice from someone who may have been in this situation? What are the courses of action besides masters, offcycle receuting once gpa is bumped up, or working at a tiny shop ( if they'll even take me). Any advice appreciated
Bump
What is the target? You need to tell us.
High semi target, think Ross McIntire stern
Yeah idk you're kinda fucked. Stern is the best school of the three but a low gpa is the worst at Stern out of the 3. I'd say you can aim for a smaller consulting shop, find a really good story, good GMAT, and get into a t10 MBA and bbq chicken from there.
Can you extend graduation by 1 semester, load up on GPA booster classes (can you take summer classes or January term as well?) + get an internship and recruit next year instead?
If you aren't doing well with networking at this point, you're behind the ball. Lots of transfer students do an extra semester or year anyway
Yeah, I can extend graduation and even do a masters of finance or whatever I need to do. I really do think this semester was an adjustment semester, as I had a 4.0 before transferring to a target.
Besides all of that, do I sit this recruiting cycle out? I have networked a decent amount and done so much shit that it feels like it might be all for nothing if I can’t get a first round bc of gpa.
Taking a 1 semester extension is better for most people - cheaper, can spread out credits a bit and just put "December 202X" on your resume and no one will care. You also won't even be applying for a masters until after your internship is over so hard to show the timeline on your resume.
You can give it a try this recruiting cycle and decide later if you want to push graduation, but if you're considering waiting until next year I would just focus on your most realistic options - small firms. Most small boutiques aren't going to recruit until at least the summer or fall though, there's no reason for them to sign people a year out like the larger firms
Hey dude, happy to be a resource if you want to shoot me a PM. I’m at a regional boutique and help run a good portion of our recruiting efforts. We also have a few senior bankers who are McIntire alums.
Fellow 3.1 GPAer at a top BB/EB. It’s possible. Need to show a real improvement in grades over time and have a logical & real story as to why your GPA is(was) low.
Networking in your case can be incredibly helpful. Lower GPA can be supplemented if you've got people who'll vouch for you. I didn't have the strongest GPA, but having people who vouch for you because of your story, other involvement/skills, etc., can go a long way. Story matters a lot.
First step is to round 3.16 to 3.2
I’m at UVA but a first year. What type of school did you transfer from? A CC? T50? T25?
cumulate your gpa (combine them) from your old school and just note it on everything know plenty of people including myself doing the same
You sure you can do that? I just dont want to get in trouble
