90K as an Associate (CIB) at NYC BB. Am I being ripped off?

Hi Everyone!

I am currently in the negotiation stage for a Strategy Associate role at a BB in NYC. It's a Tech Strategy role for a BB within the CIB line of business. It's basically an internal consultant role for tech.

According to my research (Glassdoor), Strategy Analysts make about 100k, and Strategy Associates 110k on average. This is 2021 data and doesn't seem to reflect the two 10% pay hikes that occurred mid-2021 and starting 2022. Just "Associate" in NY shows 123k average.

I had a talk with an internet stranger this morning who claimed to have asked 140k for what seems to be this same role, to which HR responded positively.

I just talked to HR and said that according to my research, the range is 140k-160k. He said that this was WAY off, and that the range was more like 80-90k. I said that I was really interested in the role, but that this seemed way off to me. He said he would talk to the hiring manager.

How is it possible they are giving me a range of 80-90k as an associate? That would mean they are paying analysts what? 60k-70k in NYC? It doesn't make sense to me.

How can I improve my position in this? Am I being too ambitious?

Tl;Dr: being offered 80-90k for an associate position in NYC that seems to be 130k at least.
