A2A VP Exits at EBs

Hello all,

What are some of the exit opportunities as an A2A senior associate/jr vp at one of the EBs in the states? I was pretty dead set on PE while recruiting but am not too sure about that as of now.

Would it be possible to spend some time in banking, then maybe exit to PE as a senior associate/jr vp? Definitely not expecting MF/UMM but wondering about some opportunities at respectable MM funds.

Thank you!

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here’s what you need to know about exit opportunities as an A2A senior associate or junior VP at elite boutiques (EBs):

  1. Private Equity (PE):

    • Transitioning to PE as a senior associate or junior VP is possible, though it may limit your options to middle-market (MM) funds rather than megafunds (MFs) or upper middle-market (UMM) funds.
    • Your experience and relationships built in banking can still make you an attractive candidate for MM PE firms, especially if you can demonstrate deal experience and value-add potential.
  2. Corporate Development (Corp Dev):

    • Many professionals at this stage transition into corporate development roles at portfolio companies or other corporations. These roles often leverage your deal-making experience and provide a more balanced lifestyle compared to banking or PE.
  3. Business Development (Biz Dev) or FP&A Roles:

    • Joining a corporation in a business development or financial planning & analysis (FP&A) capacity is another common path. These roles allow you to apply your financial expertise in a strategic, operational context.
  4. Hedge Funds or Other Investment Funds:

    • While less common, some individuals move into hedge funds or other specialized investment funds, particularly if they have a strong interest in a specific asset class or strategy.
  5. Entrepreneurship or Startups:

    • Some professionals use their experience to transition into startups, either in operational roles or by starting their own ventures. This is particularly appealing for those with an entrepreneurial mindset.
  6. Business School (MBA):

    • Pursuing an MBA remains a viable option, especially if you’re looking to pivot into a different industry or role. Post-MBA, you could re-enter PE, banking, or explore other opportunities like consulting or strategy roles.
  7. Staying in Banking:

    • If you’re not entirely sold on PE or other exits, staying in banking and progressing to a more senior role (e.g., VP or Director) is a solid option. Many EBs have strong internal promotion tracks, and you could continue to build your career within the firm.

Ultimately, your exit opportunities will depend on your deal experience, network, and the narrative you craft about your career goals. If you’re considering PE, targeting MM funds is realistic, but don’t discount other paths like corporate roles or even staying in banking if the fit feels right.

Think joining as a Sr Associate / Junior VP is exceedingly rare. May have to step down a level from what I've seen
