ABL to DCM, LAF, Coverage, etc…
I have been working in ABL for a major international bank in NYC (BNP, HSBC, Barclays, etc..) for a year and a half now, I will hit two years in the fall. Before this I was working at another international bank (Deutsche, UBS, Credit Suisse) for one year in a middle office role in trading. I was in the U.S. military before that. I graduated from a major state university, non-target while on active duty (Ohio State, Penn State, UF, etc.) and really had no idea what to do with my life when I got out of the military, I actually faced homelessness for about a year before I ended up at said bank. Essentially my path to this point has not been traditional whatsoever. I have never done an internship and I have always felt like I’ve had to fight tooth and nail to just get to this point.
I am a part time MBA student at one of the T10 schools (Booth, Kellog, Stern) and I will be 75% done with my program when I hit the two year mark, I do classes on Saturday mornings and the GI bill has funded it all. I did part time over full time because I was not willing to give up working, the stint of borderline homelessness really did a number on me.
I am done with ABL, I see no future in it and want more. I currently make $110k and my bonus this year was $25k but I want to do more. The work is getting boring and repetitive. All of the deals I have worked on have been LBOs involving our LAF desk. My question really is what should my next step be to get out of here? My modeling skills are solid and on par with anything you’ll see in IB, most of my work has ended up in LAF write ups.
I want to make the jump to LAF, DCM, Coverage, etc… at MM operations like RBC, Scotia, ING, etc.. but I am not sure really where to start or what to apply for. I don’t know if the MBA makes me overqualified for analyst roles or under qualified for associate roles given I’m not 100% done and have not done an associate summer internship. Not sure if it matters but I have my SIE, 79, and 63 as well. I know I can network internally but that is contingent on openings, I am really looking externally. Any input is appreciated. I am planning on starting the process of changing jobs right at the two year mark in the fall.
