Advice needed: Go from CC to SC business school to IB analyst --- slim to no chance?

Hello all,

To tell a bit about myself, I am 18 years old intelligent, but never took high school seriously (immense regrets!). Due to that, I now have to attend community college in the state of South Carolina.

I've been sold on investment banking, but I am concerned.

I know that transferring to the University of South Carolina - Darla Moore School of Business can be quite a smooth process because I am an in-state student ... provided my grades are good, of course.

What worries me is that this is not a traditional target school.

From what I understand, nailing an analyst job is the hardest part of breaking into the field, so where do I go from here? I am an African-American male, which apparently can be an advantage? Boy, I thought affirmative action was stupid until now ! :P :)

From what I've read, there's a lot of risk and luck involved in attempting to break into this field because the competition is so high. I'm ready to put in the work required to make it, but is it better that I stop pursuing this while I'm ahead and start looking at other careers?

Thanks very much, my friends, for any information you can provide.

Use the search function, network, get a high GPA, check where the alumni from U of SC typically go, and transfer somewhere else if it sucks.

Does the success of the alumni really dictate your future level of success? No one from my school has ever made it to a front office role on the sell side in NY, but I am still going to try.

Not necessarily but it would be a hell of a lot easier if you transferred to a school where the alumni have a strong representation on the street.

That makes sense. Luckily, the flagship school of my public state school system has a pretty strong alumni base on Wall Street. I'm not at the flagship school, but am contacting all the alumni from the school. So far, it seems they really don't care which campus I'm from as long as we're from the same system.

Then why don't you transfer to the flagship school instead?...

I'm a rising junior, so it's a little late. Besides, I have a full ride at my current school and transfers don't get scholarships. I wouldn't be able to afford the tuition and am not taking out loans for any reason. I'll make do with what I have.

SC gets 1 or 2 people to BofA in Charlotte each year but beyond that it's pretty slim pickings as far as IB goes.
