Advocating for yourself - lateral hiring
Sometimes, an opening will be posted for analyst/associate or associate/vp. If a recruiter says "we'd like to offer you a role at a Junior level" but you would like to come in slightly higher (ie senior analyst or senior associate) and have the experience to back it up, how do you approach this conversation?
Based on the most helpful WSO content, advocating for yourself in lateral hiring requires a mix of confidence, preparation, and tact. Here's how you can approach the conversation:
Highlight Your Experience: Clearly articulate how your experience aligns with the responsibilities of the higher-level role. Use specific examples of your achievements, leadership, and technical expertise to demonstrate why you're qualified for the senior position.
Leverage Your Current Title and Reputation: If you're already performing at a higher level in your current role or have a strong track record at a reputable firm, emphasize this. Mention how your current responsibilities mirror those of the senior role you're targeting.
Be Direct but Professional: Politely express your interest in the higher-level role. For example, you could say, "I appreciate the offer for the Junior level role, but based on my experience and the responsibilities I've handled, I believe I would be a strong fit for the [senior] level position. Could we discuss this further?"
Know the Market and Role Expectations: Research the typical qualifications and expectations for the senior role at the firm. This will help you make a compelling case and show that you're well-informed.
Be Prepared to Negotiate: If the recruiter or firm is hesitant, be ready to discuss how you can prove your capabilities, such as taking on additional responsibilities or demonstrating your value during a probationary period.
Maintain Relationships: Even if the firm insists on the junior role, consider accepting it if the firm aligns with your long-term goals. You can always prove yourself and work toward a promotion internally.
Remember, confidence and preparation are key. Approach the conversation with a clear understanding of your value and how it aligns with the firm's needs.
