I have finished my summer internship and was wondering if I should ask for him to write some sort of rec letter in my behalf? Is that what is typically done?

I would. What do you mean what would you use it for? Attach it to those applications where they include: other documents. If it's a good rec, it can only help you. Might as well, I definitely would.

Okay, but it's common sense. If it's a good rec and someone asks you for a reference, it can only help you. The only way I can see it hurting you is if his boss doesn't give a shit and half asses a rec. I would ask for it.
Btw, my boss writes recs for previous interns all the time.

Actually you're right. It's all upside and no downside (if it's bad just don't use it).
What I am thinking is that if in a future interview they ask my for it I have something, but I wont show it unless they ask
