Alantra IB USA - Thoughts?

Hi everyone,

Curious to know how Alantra's Investment Banking team in the US is. Would love to know about comp, reputation, exit opps, etc.

Thanks in advance.

Alantra's EU platform is extremely successful (think top three mid-market banks over there). Whole firm has basically been built up over the last 7-8 years with a large series of acquisitions / mergers / MD poaching from other banks. ~700 people globally, ~300 IB globally, and ~60 in the US, although that is very quickly growing. Firm is basically looking to replicate its success in Europe over in the US and is putting a lot of resources behind that. Generally it has the feel, culture, and experience of a small boutique shop but with the resources and network of a global bank (23 offices globally). There is a lot of blur between roles, you could have MDs pumping out slides and models and you could have analysts on the phone one-on-one with clients or buyers (not in every scenario, obviously). Deal sizes can be upwards of 100-300M, but all teams are moving upmarket everyday. Maybe not specific to Alantra but deal flow is very strong, not like anyone is slacking. Highly entrepreneurial environment. Not exactly a household name in the US just yet, but is shaping up to be a very formidable force in the next few years.

Location depends on what sector you want to work in. Tech based in SF with a bit in Boston and NY, Consumers/Industrials in Boston, Healthcare in NY. That said, there is a lot of cross-team work within the US and with other offices globally. You'd have to talk to people from each team to get a sense of if you would like working with them, and same goes the other way around. Recruiting processes between different groups are separate. Best way in the door is networking, it's not like there is an extensive HR department that everyone has to go through. People are busy but generally are pretty responsive to chatting with people. Comp is a bit behind market but depending on who you talk to is well in exchange for a nicer lifestyle.

Know my firm hired someone from there as a lateral recently (haven’t worked with them yet but seems qualified) and heard anecdotally everyone at Alantra is trying to lateral out which certainly isn’t the best sign. My bank is a top MM so take that as you will. My guess is either comp or hours suck, why else would that many people be looking to lateral.

Yeah that definitiely isn't a good sign, do you know which team he/she is from? I've heard that their tech team is way stronger than the rest of the groups.

Very strong European presence, equivalent to a WB, HL, etc. They have been growing rapidly in the states and the Tech and A&D teams do quite well. I'm pretty sure that 100% of the AN3 and AN2 classes exited in the spring leaving a large hole in the organization at the junior level. Everyone that left seemed to have very solid exits, 3+ to MM PE and the remainder to BB or UMM banks.
