Analyst Cannon Fodder?

I’m not sure if this is a group specific thing, but it’s something I’ve noticed being on the job for a year now. What’s the deal with associates / VPs not responding to MD emails and asking me or another analyst to respond to them instead? Is this common? Why don’t they respond directly?

I used to think the same way, but there are contexts where it's useful. If they're doing this every single time, then yeah that's super annoying. At the same time, an underappreciated skill is managing up and responding to seniors, and the best way for that is reps and exposure. One of my mentors in banking would always ask me to respond to MD emails / questions, but he'd also kind of "coach" me in the things to mention (or not mention). A well-crafted response to an MD can actually avoid additional work / follow-ups, so while I was really annoyed at the time, it's served me quite well. He easily could've responded every single time but a combination of him being lazy and wanting to teach me the best way to do it serves two purposes: Analysts learn communication on top of grinding, and Associates / VPs can sit back and be lazier lol
