Analysts & Associates - "Investment Bankers" or not?

Hi Monkeys,

Overheard in the office that Analysts and Associates should not refer to themselves as "Investment Bankers" as that term is reserved for revenue-generating people.

Do you agree or disagree? To some extent it might be a valid point, but think also that my VP might be compensating for his insecurities.

Tbh I think people who verbally say they are "investment bankers" are pretty cringe - something that Patrick Bateman would say in American Psycho because he is insecure.

Just be humble and say you work in finance and then people would ask you further questions - after that you can clarify you work at an investment bank or something. Looks more humble and not like an asshole.

Yeah, this. “Investment Banker” has to be hands down one of the cringiest profession names in the world.

People are better off just saying they “work in investment banking” or they “work in finance”. If anyone is interested / cares to know more you can explain what you actually do without ever using the “investment banker” term.

I’ve heard this before. Something to the affect of, “Once you become a VP, you’re a banker.”

It’s probably because, as others have said, you’re more on the business development side. I wouldn’t put too much stock in the terminology. It’s pretty meaningless in the whole scheme of things

I think I did this right

Disagree. The title of Investment Banker is attributed to someone who works in an Investment Bank. The reason there are different titles inside a company such as Analysts, Associates, VP, etc. it's just to have an organized hierarchy so activities can be better coordinated and supervised. In other words, those titles are a categorization to better understand which responsibilities one has and how much experience he has. It's the same with any organization, a Police Department, the Army, etc. They are all policemen and soldiers, but they are classified inside the organization to better coordinate their activity.

Also, everyone from IB FO has a revenue-generating role because roles are interconnected and one (your VP for example) can't do his job if you don't do yours. As others have said, your VP has clearly insecurities and an inferiority complex which shouldn't concern you. At the end, titles are worth shit and such ego competition is truly irrelevant as long as you can put food on the table.
