Analysts/Associates: What Annoys You During Coffee Chats
I have done a good amount of coffee chats, and I am about to start doing a lot more over the summer. So I want to know what some of the worst things someone could do that instantly make you want to leave the meeting.
Genuinely asking because I want to avoid making the same mistakes myself.

don't order a glass of milk
Don't start ranting about crazy college nights or that you've pulled this girl that interned at my bank last summer (real story)
A few that come to mind.
One guy kept asking to see those cannons. Weird.
Other one ordered a tall boy at 9am in the morning and slammed it. Safe to say we gave him a referral.
Would just be sure to ask more questions and minimize trying to boast about your accomplishments. No one really cares about some analysis you did or some pitch that worked out.
Also, keep politics/activism out of it. I had someone before go on and on about how it’s our duty to save the environment / our generation’s burden , etc etc - really off putting stuff tbh

don't come with a weak "why IB" or poor understanding of what kind of work bankers do.
research the vertical. e.g., if you're talking to a FIG banker you better ask questions that suggest you understand it's not an EBITDA-based industry.
don't brag about your accomplishments or say that you have extensive experience or "experience in M&A"; no you don't.
acting inhuman
Just don't be a bot, have some personality, and variance in your tone
^this. hate when someone has a list of questions and just reads them off monotonously.
Also if I ask you what industry group you’re interested or some basic ass question at least try to answer.
Don't use AI to come up with your questions about a banker's coverage group, it's very obvious to anyone with an ounce of experience with the industry when you do. Better would be to use Ai to inform yourself then ask your own intelligent questions.
Also if you're from my college, I do always like hearing about how things are going so if we were in the same clubs / major / frat then talk about that.
