Brooklyn Heights is worth it. It depends on where you work. If you work in mid-town, anything lower than Brooklyn Heights can be a 30+ minute commute, so it is up to you.
If you will be working in the financial district, jc is also a good option.

Brooklyn Heights is a great place to live and if you work downtown, your commute is 10-15 minutes. However, any other part of BK is easily a 30-40 minute commute, I know first hand.
You can also check out somewhere like Astoria... the commute is quick to midtown (20 mins in afternoon). Downside is that you probably won't find as young a crowd as Manhattan, BH, or JC.

Cobble Hill to midtown is about 40 minutes in the morning. 20 to 30 minute car service late night.

Hello,
I was thinking of moving to a place on Dekalb Ave right next to Long Island University; seems like the rent is cheap and the transportation is nice (1/2 block from Dekalb Av stop with B, Q and R), at least relatively speaking. My question for you guys was, does anyone know how safe/unsafe the area is? I assumed it would be at least somewhat safe with a university and a park right next to me, but some posts on the web (although from 2013) suggest that this is not the case. Have any of you guys lived around this area and can you shed some light on the matter?

There is the largest high school in the United States across the street from the park, expect the train station to be bombarded with immature little imbenciles.
I wouldn't venture out past dark in the neighborhood.
Guy or girl? It can get a little rowdy during the day when the high school is opening and getting out in the afternoon, but nothing serious, just school kids causing mischief. You're right next to Fort Greene and Boerum Hill which are upscale family neighborhoods these days and you'd have to be pretty dumb to get in any trouble. Like 'hey homeless guy, can you hold my phone while I tie my shoes?' level oblivious. So you could say your odds are better than an average night at, oh say, Joshua Tree or a similar establishment...
The one thing I would say is that there are some projects a few blocks to the north, just don't walk through them at night, but I can't imagine you'd have a reason to anyways.

I will be working in Midtown next year. Would it be ridiculous living by the L stop on Bedford Avenue in Brooklyn? I know a lot of people try to live as close to the office as possible, but I was wondering if it would be that big of a detriment (ie. would I die in the morning or collapse from exhaustion eventually?). How bad is it compared to living on the UES or downtown below 14th?

The L runs frequently...you would be adding about 10-15 minutes to your commute, but saving 30-40% in living expenses. Definitely do-able.
If you're thinking of living in the city, LES/East Village/West Village are the best for going out and experiencing the city. I have friends on UES who dislike it as they have to commute everytime they want to go out with friends, weekends, etc.
I've begun to look also for next year, seems like LES and the East Village are the most affordable. Are there any nice buildings in that area that anyone could recommend?
Murray Hill is a good spot if you want to be surrounded by hot girls and good indian food. Affordable and NYC is an oxymoron. Your best bet for affordability is to get a 1 BR and convert it to a 2 bedroom and share with a friend.
East Village and LES are generally the cheaper neighborhoods...still expensive, but great places to live. Alphabet City is another neighborhood, East of 1st, which is a great alternative.
