Oh i should’ve been clearer this is for SA 2024, does that still apply?

Ye I used to get like 3-4 replies when I’d send 30ish emails and me and my friend both got 0 last week. Had a couple pre-existing contacts push chats as well due to workload

BB analyst here. I try to respond to everyone, but there’s a few reasons it’s tough

  • the market picked up significantly the last 2 weeks (pulling 3am nights) and the first thing on our list to dump ends up being cold emails from students
  • I personally receive 3-4 cold emails a day so it’s really difficult to get back to everyone and make room for them. 3 emails a day x 5 days a week is 15 students multiplied by 30 min each is a lot of hours in a week allocated to cold emails from randos
  • there’s not really that much we can do to help besides answer questions. If we went to the same school, we can push your resume with HR, but it’s very unlikely we do it for a student not from our school. unless you’re really that impressive, we likely won’t give one of our “boosts” to someone not from our alma mater because they’re limited and we’d rather grow our own alumni network once you join
  • going off the last point, there isn’t that much we personally get out of taking cold emails. It’s not like we get a referral bonus for summer interns (like they do for full time hires) I usually like to take them as a break during the week to get away from the desk and chill out in a private conference room. Give me MS for it, but it’s the truth.
  • it’s hard to take the calls when you have work to do and getting up from your desk draws attention and people see you’re not doing work. Combine that with the busy market and it’s a good way to piss off your seniors
  • If you aren’t busy with work, you’re opening yourself up to another staffing which is never fun because you’re signaling you have too much free time
  • sadly, some cold-emails are really bad (students don’t change the bank name) and/or the conversations are poor. I’ve had multtiole students ask me to refer them / push to HR which just comes off as entitlement since I’ve only spoken with you for 15 min or so

In short, it’s a mix of not having the time, low probability the convo will be productive, and low incentive for us to take the calls. I personally don’t have much advice to give either because all I know is our schools own process and how many times do I have to answer “why bank?” And “what’s it like being an analyst?”

this was an amazing answer and put me at a bit more ease, I thought I got dinged everywhere lol, i really appreciate you taking the time to type it all out.

Also, just as a general recommendation across the board, please only email during regular business hours (9am to maybe 6/7pm). I’m getting 5-10 inbounds a day in the last few weeks, and it’s impossible to get to them all.

If you email me on the Saturday evening of Presidents’ Day weekend, before 8am, or after 11pm (all of which have happened in the last week), then that’s an easy way for me to filter out and ignore those immediately.
