Approaching Netwokring Calls with MDs and Global Heads

I'm an incoming sophomore recruiting for 2028 SA from a non-target. Was able to get 2 of my cold emails to result in calls with Global Heads of M&A at 2 different BB, and want to know how to approach talking to someone so senior.

Landing calls with Global Heads of M&A as a sophomore from a non-target is an impressive feat! Here's how to approach these calls effectively:

1. Preparation is Key

  • Research Their Background: Use LinkedIn or other resources to understand their career trajectory, alma mater, and any notable deals they've worked on. This helps you tailor your questions and show genuine interest.
  • Understand Current Events: Be aware of recent trends, deals, or news in the M&A space. This demonstrates your industry awareness and makes for engaging conversation.
  • Know Your Story: Be ready to succinctly explain your background, why you're interested in investment banking, and your long-term goals. Keep it concise and relevant.

2. Structure the Call

  • Start with Gratitude: Thank them for taking the time to speak with you.
  • Ask for Insights: Frame your questions around their experiences and advice. For example:
    • "What trends do you see shaping the M&A landscape in the next few years?"
    • "What skills or qualities do you think are most important for someone starting out in investment banking?"
  • Seek Guidance: Ask for advice on how to navigate recruiting as a non-target student or how to stand out in the process.
  • Be Curious About Their Journey: Senior bankers often enjoy sharing their stories. Ask questions like:
    • "What motivated you to pursue a career in M&A?"
    • "What has been the most rewarding deal or experience in your career?"

3. Exude Humble Confidence

  • Be respectful and professional, but also confident in your interest and eagerness to learn.
  • Avoid coming across as overly rehearsed or trying to impress them with technical knowledge you don’t fully understand.

4. Make It Conversational

  • While you should have prepared questions, let the conversation flow naturally. Listen actively and build on their responses.
  • Avoid dominating the conversation or making it feel like an interrogation.

5. End with a Clear Ask

  • If the conversation goes well, politely ask if they would be open to staying in touch or if they could provide further guidance as you navigate recruiting.
  • Example: "I really appreciate your insights today. Would it be okay if I reached out in the future with any questions as I continue to explore opportunities in M&A?"

6. Follow Up

  • Send a thoughtful thank-you email within 24 hours. Mention something specific from the conversation to show you were engaged and appreciative.

By being prepared, respectful, and genuinely curious, you'll leave a strong impression on these senior professionals. Best of luck with your calls and recruiting journey!
