Did he say “you should apply” or was it “I WANT you to apply”? More prospects generally improves their talent pool and makes their acceptance rate go down so that could be his motivation for the first one. Also he could genuinely think you might be a good fit for the team, which is always a plus.  Either way I wouldn’t read into it too much but it seems like a good thing overall. Plus (in the worst case scenario) if you’re getting bad vibes from him you can just use the potential offer to shop around.

Short version - met a partner/MD at social events with my family, 1st time we met he told me to apply (yes he said "I want you to apply because you're a young woman with class") and because my family has a good reputation. I'm cdn and this would entail a lot of work recruiting wise, he kept pushing me to go to his alma matter and keeps bringing this up whenever he sees my family, eg so when will your daughter be joining us etc.? Met him at many events now (few at his bank) when I recognized some of the analysts (kids of the same social circle) he told me not to talk to any of them and didn't know any of their (his subordinates) names? I was shocked. None of his college-aged kids went to IBD so I'm confused? Do u think he's just fishing for business? Told me I was wasting my potential if I didn't go into banking and while he's successful in his own right was surprised by his social duplicitousness? And his own daughter hasn't interned or anything like that at the bank either? Any other red flags I should be aware of?

I assume CDN is Canadian? Honestly it sounds like he has been told to increase female talent and is trying to widen the funnel and make sure you apply. You are seemingly in the same social circle, and he’s a warm connection. He might see you as a good cultural fit and wants to make sure you feel welcome to apply. I wouldn’t worry about what his children do, there are so many other paths especially if your parent makes MD money. You potentially have a good opportunity here.

We can all speculate but its impossible to know his motivations. You say this could be to win new business? Does your family run a large business - if so possibly.

But who cares, if you want to enter banking and the opportunity / learning it can offer. Go for jt. You have a senior vouching for.
