Aso to VP timeline

I have 5+ years of experience across IB and PE and recently lateraled to my current firm. My career path has involved a couple of moves that have already pushed my title progression back relative to where I otherwise would have been.

When I joined my current firm, I was also brought in a year lower than I thought I was coming in at. This wasn’t something that was clearly communicated to me during the recruiting / offer process — I actually didn’t realize how I had been officially leveled until I received my first paystub.

As a result, I’m now an associate class year below where I think my experience would suggest I should be. Absent the lateral moves / resets, I would naturally be on track for VP next year.

Performance-wise, I had a very strong mid-year review and multiple senior reviewers explicitly told me I’m operating at the VP level. I’m also increasingly functioning as the senior associate / VP on deals — managing analysts, driving execution, interacting with clients / senior bankers, etc.

Thoughts on how I should navigate pushing to have my year re-evaluated / effectively skip an associate year so that my title catches back up with my experience and I can be on the appropriate VP timeline?

How would you approach the conversation without coming across entitled but knowing your worth?

Would you frame it around total experience + the level I’m currently performing at, or explicitly raise the fact that I came in a year below what I understood my level to be?

Also curious whether this is something that can realistically be addressed through the YE promotion process or if class years tend to be pretty rigid once you’re in the system.
