This article explains most of it.
They were invested in a company (Franchise Group) that was being investigated for, and committed fraud. Then the SEC started looking into B Riley, essentially trying to figure out if B Riley knew about the fraud. That all happened late last year.
Then last week, the SEC decided to expand its investigation into B Riley, while B Riley announced the same day they were pausing dividends. Shares took a shit and now the founder is offering to take them private.
