How do background checks work regarding past internships? Do they just check dates or do they also check what you actually did? Because most people will exaggerate a bit so wondering how that plays out. On what grounds will a firm rescind your offer

That's what I thought, they just check the dates you were there
But someone just told me something different (maybe its just the firm they joined) , where the 3rd party agency apparently sends a report of your roles and what you did and asks you for contact details of your supervisor or manager etc.
Sounds incredibly unlikely. though who knows, anything is possible i guess

I can confirm that firms do this for SA '27. At a BB and had to go through this last month. Super chill as long as you haven't actually lied about anything significant in your resume. Takes about a week.

In my experience (HireRight), they contacted my previous employer and my manager and essentially asked for a review/feedback on my performance - they also clarify if you left/ended on good-terms.
Best not to lie on your CV, it'll catch up to you anyways

i mean generally they arent cross checking w ur resume, so dont put smth on the check u dont want to, unless it was paid

Realistically for interns they’re just checking dates (if at all).
More broadly though, if there’s bullets on your CV that you can’t reasonably defend in an interview, I would probably get rid of them…
