Bad intern review, next steps?

My bank buckets interns into 4 buckets: on track, on track but needs improvement, off track but can be put on track with improvement, and off track. I was bucket 3, had a few fuckups with formatting and not being communicative enough. Was told that these were easy fixes and in my control so I should be good as long as I’m locked in right?

Not sure what type of shop you’re at, but that’s pretty similar to the type of feedback we gave to interns (BB coverage group) Unfortunately, it likely means you won’t get a RO since the As/An have mostly indicated you wouldn’t be someone they’d want to have come back FT. With people starting to go out on PTO it’s going to be really hard to change their opinions since you might not have another chance to work with them.

Try to get whatever feedback you can to have a turnaround the last 4 weeks of actual work but to be pretty transparent you should start doing some back pocket prep in the case you have to find something else FT

Good to know. I am also at a BB coverage group.

I will say I did speak directly with the associate that who gave me that bad feedback (he’s the only person I’ve been staffed with the last week and a half on a live sell side) and he also echoed that he wanted me to know that feedback and it was pretty much in my control to turn the ship around. He also asked if I wanted to be there which I very much do. Will definitely try and have something in my back pocket but my group returned 100% last year. Really like it there so I just have to try my hardest to lock in lol

If you’re return offer is yours to lose, then what does it look like for you if you aren’t meeting expectations due to poor communication but you improve

I think it honestly depends on headcount tied to the performance of each individual bank. In a good year even “bucket 3” will also get a RO

I was in the “3” equivalent group at my bank and squeaked by as the worst-ranked intern above cutoff to get return offer and was top bucket analyst both years lmao

all you can do is improve
