Incoming IB Analyst (I'm a guy) in Chicago and was wondering what bag I should get for the office. Given my internship was online, I have no idea what the specific culture of the office/group is!
What do you guys recommend: a messenger bag? a backpack?

I used a backpack for the first several years of my internship until some random guys from Australia that spent a day with showing them around SF gave me an RM Williams bag, which I've found to be very useful/nice.
Also - this is an easy question to ask someone on your team...

Yeah, I was pretty surprised. I was more junior at the time and one of our largest capital partners asked us tour this group through our assets (institutional apartments don't exist in Australia and this would be one of the first major apartment developments there). Our head of AM was supposed to do it but had something come up so I flew up there last minute. We were supposed to have a van take us around, but it never showed up so my MD threw me his keys and I spent the day driving them around. A few weeks later I got a package in the mail with the bag. Been using it ever since.
dont you get a banker duffel from your firm?
Bump, is using the banker duffer common or does it give off a smug vibe when walking outside the office?

do you need a bag?
the only reason why I carry a bag is so that i can store my farts in it. then later i bring it out and fluff the bag out to stink up the room. works everytime
Would recommend a backpack and trust me no one cares what bag you have

Other than the usual suspects (Tumi, Samsonite, Briggs), Korin's Clickpacks and Everki's business backpacks namely (Atlas line) are also pretty common at my bank among AN/ASO/VPs

Get a filson briefcase or laptop bag, either works. Not super expensive, will last forever and (IMO) are timeless.
Backpacks with office wear looks silly and Tumis / “technical bags” make you look like an IT guy (don’t care how expensive they are). Leather bags are a pain in the ass to care for. Thus the filson is perfect.
How fkn old are you? Backpacks are fine. Everyone wears one these days - from ANs to MDs
