Balancing Wife's Career and IBD

I'm preparing to make my exit from the Military in about a years time. My fiancee and soon to be wife is currently doing her Post doctorate Molecular Biology at UNC, and i'm planning to do my MBA at either UNC or Duke ( if i get in) to try transitioning back into the civilian sector. I've decided that, despite the hours, i'm going to pursue IB out of my program. Unlike consulting, I can at least come home and see my wife at the end of the night.... no matter how late that might be.

One of my big concerns is trying to balance her career along side mine. Despite the low pay, low chances of getting into, and the need to make tenure, she really wants to work as a research professor in academia. I would like to support this and try to make it happen. Like bankers, they work super strange house ( though there's are much less and way more flexible) so it would make sense coming home at 1-2 in the morning some days. She would also have more time to help take care of any future kids with her ability to get away. I was thinking I should pursue NYC because if I ever changed jobs, I wouldn't have to change cities. This would let her hit tenure, then give us the opportunity to look around at other options in cheaper locations. Eventually i think we might explore moving closer to the Boston area to be closer to family. Would snagging a PE / asset management role in Boston be that impossible at the VP level? I don't feel either of my MBA programs would be ranked high enough to recruit for AM in that region right out of school.

She did her Phd at an Ivy league school. I would think it would be easier to land a role at one of the many NYC colleges, but she seems doubtful about that. The odds of staying in academia are less than 20% Ironically they claim they need more people to stay in academia. She has mentioned that it might just be best to consider looking at roles with pharma companies or looking at life science/ bio specific consulting firms. She has some friends from her PHD at BCG, and her current program has placed people in other solid firms. My concern is not asking her to leave something she's passionate about. She's incredibly talented at what she does, and loves doing actual research on the bench.

Alternatively, I've considered staying in the Charlotte or Atlanta area. Would exit opportunities in Charlotte/Atlanta at the VP level a few years later be that awful? I also don't think there are many academia sites in Charlotte besides UNCC, and as far as I know Suntrust is the biggest banking group in Atlanta. Correct me if i'm wrong/ if there are any avenues i should be exploring. I would love to get some insight from some of the married folks on here to find out how you balance your relationship and the desire to work in IB.
