UVA McIntire is widely regarded as a strong semi-target for investment banking recruiting. Based on the most helpful WSO content, here’s what you need to know:

  1. Placement Strength: UVA consistently places well in investment banking, with many alumni landing roles at bulge bracket (BB) and elite boutique (EB) banks. For example, it's noted that bulge brackets typically take anywhere from 3-10 UVA grads per year, while elite boutiques take closer to 1-5. Around 70% of these placements are in NYC, with the rest spread across cities like DC, Richmond, Charlotte, and Atlanta.

  2. Alumni Network: One of UVA's standout features is its large and loyal alumni base. A user mentioned receiving a ~70% response rate from cold emails to alumni, which is exceptionally strong for a school with 16,000 undergraduates. This network plays a significant role in helping students secure interviews and offers.

  3. McIntire's Role: While McIntire is a well-regarded business school, it’s important to note that getting into McIntire itself does not directly impact recruiting. Most banks complete their recruiting processes before McIntire students even start their classes in the fall of their third year. This means that UVA students, regardless of whether they are in McIntire or not, need to position themselves early for recruiting success.

  4. Comparison to Other Schools: UVA is often compared to other top public schools like Michigan. Both are seen as strong semi-targets, with better placement per capita than other public schools like UCLA, UCB, UT Austin, or UNC.

  5. Challenges for Non-McIntire Students: Students who do not get into McIntire or choose not to attend often face more challenges in breaking into banking. However, some have succeeded by being resourceful and leveraging the broader UVA network.

In summary, UVA McIntire is a strong semi-target with excellent placement outcomes, a robust alumni network, and a reputation for producing competitive candidates in the finance industry.

Firstly, don't doxx yourself. Change your username because I know that you're in Elmo based on that name.

But yeah UVA McIntire is 100% a target. It just doesn’t get talked about as much online for whatever reason.

I ran a pretty broad LinkedIn search and the placements are definitely there: GS, MS, JPM, BofA, Citi, Evercore, Moelis, PJT, Guggenheim, Rothschild, Houlihan, Jefferies, Harris Williams, etc.

The main thing with UVA is that the best outcomes seem to come from kids who are actually plugged in: McIntire plus clubs like MII, AIF, VVF, AKPsi, GMG, etc. So I wouldn’t say every random UVA kid has the same shot, but if you’re in McIntire and in the finance ecosystem, it’s absolutely a legit banking target.

Probably strongest for BB/MM, and then solid for EB depending on the firm. But yeah, definitely not a non-target or some random semi-target.
