I know the BBs are, what about EVR/MoCo/Jeff?
Like everything else, deal flow tends to correlate with culture (better deal flow = worse culture).
EVR/JEFF - Best deal flow & exits, but consequently soul crushing culture.
MoCo - sacrifices some deal flow, but has significantly better culture. I think on a ‘deal flow per culture’ basis it is significantly better than vast majority of shops in Houston. Buddies there work less than me and get paid just as much as EVR lol.
If you want to lateral for better culture, lateral away from Houston. Even the small MMs with no deal flow absolutely grind. Can't explain it, it's just a weird thing with the energy groups. Go to a mid-tier BB group in NYC and you will have a massive culture improvement
How does Houston culture compare to CHI?
Haven't worked in Chicago but would guess it's better... solely because Houston is well known for awful hours and culture.
There's a thread on here every single month about how horrible culturally Houston is and I've never heard bad things from Chicago friends. I'm sure there's some bad groups there but seems like Houston has a very high % of sweatshops compared to any other location
Chi is extremely firm and group dependent. Plenty of folks I know getting grinded in Chi, some others seem to have pretty solid WLB
On the flip side, what Houston banks have (relatively) better cultures?
TPH has relatively good culture for Houston standards in that while hours are still grindy, at least the seniors are pretty nice.
TPH has a bad culture. TPH had a good culture historically but it soured significantly during COVID.
Heard a TPH analyst fell asleep in an in-person MP
Moelis. Seniors are good people, junior culture is great, facetime is low, comp is high.
Evercore was great
Before you throw monkey shit, pay attention to what I said: was
Culture in Finnie era was great. You’ll have to grind but majority of the folks were very nice
That’s a fair point but no longer relevant now
Papa Shaun Finnie?
All of them, but JPM is particularly noteworthy in its brutal O&G practice down there.
If there’s a toxic workplace checklist, they fill every single box
Them H-town boys built different fr.
JPM houston hands down. There’s a thread about this a while back about how toxic that office is.
accurate
Heard analysts at my bank were getting yelled at if their status ticker was on "away" for five minutes. Bunch of them left after a year and everyone on the IB team manually puts their status to "away" so the seniors can't track them. Next level toxic.
Fart Wellsgo not too bad tbqh
Definitely mine. It’s 10pm Friday and I’m still in the office.
Resounding silence from the JEF juniors who are currently getting their backs blown out so hard by the seniors this fine Sunday night that they have no time to even drop a single comment
You’re not wrong my friend
Is the culture for trading in Houston better than banking?
Any one know about the culture at Piper?
Better than the notorious shops but not great. They have a good amount of support staff, especially for Houston, but they don’t have a ton of deal flow and are still expected to stay late in office. So, that leads to a situation where you have to be in the office late but aren’t getting as many deal reps as you should be.
Wait, do they have good deal flow or not? You're saying no, other poster said deal flow is so high that hours are bad...
Professional culture is great. Deal flow is insane though so work life balance can really suffer at times. If you want to be on five live deals at once Piper Houston is the place to be.
Are any days WFH? How much weekend work typically?
Can we get an updated ranking for Houston banks?
