Barclays CM vs Guggenheim M&A SA 26
I'm super grateful to have the opportunity to select between the two, and I've been going back and forth a lot. I'll explain my debate below. I would love any input on this decision.
- When I first began recruiting IB, I wanted to work on the biggest deals with the biggest companies. This is why I would pick Barclays over Guggenheim - I’ve head I could work on deals with F500 companies even if it’s debt issuances. I feel that Guggenheim doesn't have many headlining deals right now.
- I want to learn as much as possible about business. This is where Guggenheim M&A would be better in my opinion.
- I’d say I’m an intelligent/creative person, so I want to put those skills to use. I feel that M&A would demand more of that strategic thinking.
- I'm not too worries abt wlb early in my career, and I feel that Gugg and Barclays are good.
I would be super grateful if anyone had insight on this decision/corrections on my line of thinking. Thank you all so much!
Gugg M&A, cuz when you exit or lateral to better bank, you want to talk about M&A deal experience not capital raising. Gugg M&A will def give you a lot of actual advisory experiences
Gugg then lateral if you want. Barclays used to be open placement then split into M&A / CM.
Bump, in a similar situation but maybe worse. 26 SA for Citi CM or mm M&A coverage (think nomura, Macquarie, mizuho). Which to choose?
citi cm no brainer
Why different than the Barclays, Gugg case?
You really can't go wrong with either tbh
I would definitely lean more towards M&A opportunities at Guggenheim especially if in NYC. If you’re eventually interested in buy-side roles, you generally won’t be able to recruit from capital markets desks. But both very solid names and will get you far in industry.
Bump
I work at Barclays. If you got a coverage offer at Barc, I’d say take it over gugg.
Given that you’re talking capital markets, Guggenheim m&a is a no brained decision. You will be able to break into cap markets if you want from there, but will not be able to go the other way. Take Guggenheim
what are your thoughts on learning a bunch in ecm/dcm, then lateraling to a coverage group? I was thinking this could give lots of experience for corp dev or buy side roles.
How much time do you have to decide on this choice?
Guggenheim.
