BB Investment Banks in Asia Pacifc

Hi there, I'm currently a penultimate year student from a target school in Australia. I am intending to apply for BB IBD internship this year, specifically HK/SG/China office.

Unis in Aus do not match well with unis in other regions as we only have 1 month break June to July and 3 month break Dec to Feb. So I cant really make it for normal Summer Analyst Program. What are the other internships avail, off-cycle? Winter Analyst? How exactly do such programs work?

Hope someone with good knowledge on what banking is like in APAC ( mainly hong kong & singapore) could clear my confusion. And I hope you would be kind enough to give me a few tips as to what are the opportunites available for me, what is required from me in order to make into BB IBDs and how can I best prepare for it. Would appreciate if you could answer these questions.

Thanks, Lost monkey

Tbh, you should try applying for programs in Australia since they are more familiar with the recruiting timeline there. For SG, there are much lesser winter analyst programs (I think only UBS and SCB did take in people during the winter break before). Most of the people I know that do an internship in the Winter Break in SG usually try to aim for the corporate finance department of the big 4 since there is much lesser competition compared to the summer internship roles at big 4.

Thanks! I will definitely try applying for programs in Australia although I'm kinda pessimistic about it (my strength lies in bilingualism). Its good to hear you talked about UBS and SCB in SG, appreciate it! Do you know about HK?

Australia will probably be your best bet for now, but your language abilities might be useful if you want a transfer after a couple of years. You just need to get your foot in the door.

Just stick with Australia IBD

For Singapore, Morgan Stanley offers winter internship for IBD every year and takes mostly Australian grads from what I have seen so far. Other than that, HSBC did have winter internship a few years back - not sure whether they still have it now.

Firms like Lazard, Standard Chartered, Rothschild, Pickering Pacific, and a few other places do offer off-cycle internships in Singapore. Easiest way to check these opportunities is to get an access to NUS, NTU, or SMU career portal from your friends who study in one of these universities.

You will want to focus on IBD in Australia, though I know some banks in HK and Singapore have an Australia summer (so HK / Sing Winter) program like DB and UBS.

Aus Winter Programs - applications close ~April/May. Banks: Credit Suisse (IBD) and J.P. Morgan (IBD and research)

Aus Summer Programs - applications close July. Banks: All BB and Elite Boutiques

The top 5 banks in Australia for IBD are: UBS, Macquarie, Goldmans, Credit Suisse and Morgan Stanley.

UBS, Macquarie and Goldmans have the most man power on the floor so tend to be top 3 league tables but Credit Suisse and MS tend to have highest revenue per head in Australia

US banks like BAML, JPM tend to not do too well here. DB and Citi are okay.
