Bonus Bananas January 31, 2014
1) HSBC imposes restrictions on large cash withdrawals (BBC News) - HSBC continues to win friends and influence people, this time by refusing withdrawals of as little as £4,000 if the customer can't explain why he wants his money. Oh, and they've been doing it since November and didn't even bother to tell anyone. Nice.
2) Goldman Sachs sued for $1bn by Libyan fund (The Guardian) - Goldman's been taking it from all angles this week. Here they're accused of taking advantage of Gaddafi, in Denmark 2,500 people turned out to protest their acquisition of DONG (totally serious), and an Australian hedge fund was given the green light to proceed with their fraud case against Goldman regarding RMBS shenanigans in 2007. It's hard out there for a pimp.
3) Box has secretly filed for an IPO (Quartz) - Second place is the first loser, and cloud storage darling Box intends to beat competitor Dropbox to the market by hook or by crook. Sneaky buggers.
4) Former Googlers Launch A Cool Startup That Will Make The Internet Much Safer (Business Insider) - This is such a cool idea, I can't believe someone didn't come up with it sooner. These guys figured out you can beat hackers at their own game by essentially planting a virus in your own website. I imagine banks and online retailers will be lining up for this tech.
5) The Truth About The NFL, The Super Bowl, And Sex Slavery (Deadspin) - Coming from New Orleans (where the Super Bowl is held fairly regularly) I can vouch that some really untoward shit goes down when the circus comes to town. I imagine it's that times ten in New York this week.
6) Why the rich are freaking out (Politico) - Tom Perkins may have kicked a hornets nest with his ignorant comments this week, but he's certainly not alone in that mindset.
7) Nearly Half of America Lives Paycheck-to-Paycheck (Time Magazine) - How do you spell T-I-P-P-I-N-G P-O-I-N-T?
8) Jeb Bush says he’ll decide on 2016 run ‘later this year’ (NY Daily News) - Please God, no. Just...no.
9) Meet the gal with the longest legs in NYC (NY Post) - Yowza.
10) The Hidden Ecosystem Of The Walmart Parking Lot (Fast Company) - Be prepared to be shocked by this. I had no idea. Now I'm just wondering how many of the people who work inside live in the parking lot.
Video of the Week:
This week's video is just plain fun. Go full screen on this one, and sit back and enjoy. It'll be the best five minutes of your work day.
That's it for this week, fellas. Enjoy the Super Bowl, have a tremendous weekend, and let me know what you think about this week's Bananas in the comments.
Bush 2016
I have zero interest in politicians or voting but I would rather stick a sharpened pencil in my eyeball than vote for one of the bushes
I was joking, but ok
Perkins may have used a reference that wasn't PC but his point was actually quite possible and accurate. All it takes is someone who is super popular to get people to hate a group of people enough to justify horrific things. It has happened many times in the past. All you need is an extremely small minority, the Jews at the time made up 0.86% of the population. The President going around and saying, "Hey you poor people over there, forget about the fact that you dropped out of school, that you live like you are a child. Those aren't choices that you made, no that rich person over there made that happen to you." While he isn't exactly saying it that bluntly, that is the general gist of what he is saying.
I believe WSJ came out and said that he was right
This is one of the dumbest things I have ever seen you post.
Look at history, I am in no way saying Perkins has to worry about that. However the analogy he made isn't as crazy as the headlines made it out to be.
Ooh la la...daddy likes.
LOL #2 ha. DONG. hahahahaha. Danish DONG. BWAHAHAHAHAHA
5 How is this still even happening? And why aren't the pimps/johns publicly executed? I'd pay to see that. Jeez. 6 The US is going through a transformative period and the long term position of the US is very good. That business leaders aren't making this more clear is a failure of leadership. These are the same type of guys that are making a fortune on college football but are opposed to the actual players getting a cut. When did "let them eat cake" translate to "become a tech entrepeneur"?Guys like Perkins are right on one level. Short term pain, long term gain.
But they don't need to be such a dick about it.
Pour on the reality hatorade.
Someone just posted this to Reddit. Probably the best Super Bowl ad ever:
Word on the street in Jersey is that someone bribed God to make superbowl day 50 degrees and sunny instead of freezing.
DONG. HAHAHahaha I'm still laughing over that.
7 & 10) Wow. Crazy crazy stuff.
5) What kind of sick people are in this damn world. I was watching TedTalks: "Head Games" last night, so fascinated with mental health. It's crazy some many people don't realize the trauma in their life affects them significantly.
P.S. Anyone else as horribly sick as I am?
Eddie, you been in France too long? What's with all the inequality stuff?
No, it's not that. It's just what's in the news lately. That said, I definitely take issue with how obviously rigged the game is in the US and think that we have an obligation to show the rest of the world what successful capitalism looks like. Bestowing upon corporations the rights of individual citizens is counterproductive to that end.
VOTW - looks like adidas taking another leaf out of the red bull marketing playbook. Soon people will be base jumping and cliff diving plastered in adidas logos. Interested to see whether this extreme marketing tactic traditionally reserved for energy drinks pays off for mainstream sportswear companies or whether there will be some kind of backlash against the inherent disregard for human safety.
