Bought a flight returning within the same day to meet a MD for lunch

Basically got lucky enough to be referred to an MD who is open for lunch. For some background, I am at a top 35 school but definitely not target.

I am an incoming junior and scrambling/trying everything possible to get.a last minute seat for SA26. What should I ask/talk about with him to make the best impression possible?

To make the best impression during your lunch with the MD, here’s a game plan based on the most helpful WSO content:

1. Preparation is Key

  • Research the MD: Know their background, career trajectory, and current role. This shows genuine interest and respect for their time.
  • Understand the Industry: Be up-to-date on the latest trends, deals, and news in the MD’s sector or group. This will help you ask insightful questions.
  • Know Your Story: Be ready to articulate your background, why you’re interested in investment banking, and what makes you a strong candidate.

2. Structure the Conversation

  • Start with Gratitude: Thank them for taking the time to meet with you.
  • Introduce Yourself Briefly: Share your background, your school, and your interest in IB, but keep it concise.
  • Ask Smart Questions: Avoid generic questions like “What’s a typical day like?” Instead, ask:
    • “What do you think differentiates top-performing analysts from the rest?”
    • “How do you see the industry evolving in the next few years?”
    • “What advice would you give to someone from a non-target school trying to break into IB?”
  • Show Curiosity: Ask about their career path, challenges they’ve faced, and what they enjoy most about their role.

3. Demonstrate Value

  • Highlight your willingness to learn and work hard. Share any relevant experiences or skills (e.g., financial modeling, internships, leadership roles) that show you’re prepared for the role.
  • If appropriate, mention how you’ve been proactive in networking and preparing for the SA role.

4. End on a Strong Note

  • Express Interest: Reiterate your enthusiasm for the opportunity to work in IB and your appreciation for their insights.
  • Ask for Advice: End with something like, “What would you recommend I focus on in the next few months to position myself for success?”
  • Follow Up: After the lunch, send a thoughtful thank-you email, referencing specific points from your conversation.

Bonus Tips:

  • Be Professional but Personable: While you want to impress, don’t forget to be authentic and approachable.
  • Mind Your Etiquette: Be punctual, dress appropriately, and mind your table manners.

This is a golden opportunity, so make the most of it by being prepared, engaged, and professional. Good luck!

Pretty sure it will not be for 26. 26 recruitment for WF is well and closed. Not sure about big 4, but good luck.

If you want to give off a solid rep, I say you listen more and talk less since I think it's better to recall the info he's saying and draft questions based on what he's talking about. It will show you're more attentive. Not sure what else to say but yeah just be genuine.
