Breaking into IB
I live in New Jersey and am a freshman at Ramapo College, where I have maintained a 3.75 GPA after my first year. In high school, I graduated with a GPA of 3.0. I am actively involved in several clubs, including the investing, consulting, and accounting clubs. Additionally, I served as the varsity soccer captain during my high school years. I also created a Shopify store that generated significant traffic through TikTok ads.
Now that I've shared a bit about myself, I'm wondering which colleges I should consider transferring to in order to break into investment banking. I come from a middle-class family.
Based on the most helpful WSO content, transferring to a target or semi-target school is a critical step for breaking into investment banking, especially if you're currently at a non-target like Ramapo College. Here are some schools you should consider, keeping in mind transfer acceptance rates, alumni networks, and placement into IB roles:
Cornell University (AEM or Hotel School): Known as the most transfer-friendly Ivy League school, Cornell places very well into banking. A GPA above 3.8 and strong extracurriculars will boost your chances.
University of Michigan - Ross School of Business: Offers solid placement in NYC and Chicago. However, transferring into Ross is competitive, and you may need to spend a year before applying to the business school.
New York University (Stern): Stern has excellent placement into IB, but its transfer acceptance rate is extremely low. Many transfers opt for NYU Economics, which still provides access to Stern's OCR (On-Campus Recruiting).
Georgetown University (McDonough School of Business): Places very well into NYC IB roles and has a strong alumni network. The transfer acceptance rate is around 10%.
University of North Carolina (Kenan-Flagler): Strong placement into Charlotte and NYC IB roles. However, econ students do not enjoy the same OCR opportunities as business students.
Indiana University - Kelley School of Business: Kelley has a strong reputation for IB placement, especially through its Investment Banking Workshop. It’s also more transfer-friendly compared to other top schools.
University of Virginia (McIntire School of Commerce): McIntire is highly competitive for transfers, but it has excellent placement into IB. Econ majors at UVA do not enjoy the same recruiting opportunities as McIntire students.
Columbia University: With a 6% transfer acceptance rate, it’s extremely competitive but offers solid placement into IB.
Boston College (Carroll School of Management): A semi-target with strong placement into IB, especially in Boston and NYC.
Villanova University: A semi-target with a strong alumni network and good placement into IB roles.
Key Considerations:
Given your middle-class background, also consider schools with strong financial aid programs to minimize debt.
