Buying Event Tickets (Concerts, Sports, etc) in Advance During Analyst Stint

What are your thoughts on buying tickets in advance for events like concerts and sports that you may or may not be able to attend? Do you pay up and hope you can either go or sell them, especially if you think the event will sell out?

I ask because there's a show I want to see on a Saturday early evening in September. I assume I'll be able to go if I get my work done in the morning but I don't want to buy this one and tickets for other shows and let them go to waste. I also assume that it's only even a question if it's on a friday or saturday night?

wandererI'm in a similar situation. I was thinking of getting tickets to the patriots jets game at the meadowlands with a friend. I think I will buy the tickets and just tell my friend to find a backup in case I can't make it.

Weekend events are pretty reasonable to plan for, especially something like a football game. Just let people know going into the weekend that you have these tickets, that you're planning to have your blackberry in hand from friday evening until sunday morning and that you'll be plugged back in as soon as you return from the game. Unless something has gone really, really wrong this should be fine.

Dudes, get the tickets. Your bosses aren't that bad, if you tell them in advance, they will let you go. It's not as dog crap of a life as people make it seem.

I’ve been in this spot plenty of times, especially when my work schedule is unpredictable. I usually buy the tickets for events I really want to go to, even if there’s a chance I might not make it. If it turns out I can’t go, I just try to sell the tickets to friends or use some of the legit resale platforms, though sometimes you take a small loss. I find weekends are easier to plan for, but there’s always a little risk.

For harder-to-find or sold-out shows, I’ve used Star Tickets and found it pretty straightforward. Good for grabbing premium seats too if your plans come together last minute.

Just tell people you have something on a weekend and make sure there is an associate or someone who can over for you and go.

Unless it's every weekend and you only bring up the conflict once there is work, no one will say anything. Just tell people in advance, i'll be out xx time. and if they ask you to do something while at the concert, say I'm at xx, i'll finish this when I get back.
