Buyside recruiting for someone who lateraled into banking as a first year
Transferred to banking as a first year and now I am interested in potential buyside opportunities. Other analysts in my BB bank have been receiving more e-mails from headhunters. I suspect that this is because of the fact that I missed training and I was not included in the "facebook" of first year analysts. Should I reach out proactively to headhunters to introduce myself/my situation and if so, when should I do so? Also, is there any rush in submitting profiles online at the HHs' websites - I was thinking about waiting for some better deal experience before getting a draft ready for the HHs. Thanks!
interested
yes, you should reach out asap
re contacts (assuming you are in NY), would ask around the bullpen for the latest, but usual suspects include amity, mckibben group, sg, CPI, etc (forgetting a few, but there are plenty of wso posts on this)
I have no experience w/submitting profiles online, so cannot speak to that. would recommend reaching out to individuals directly where possible
Just ask the other analysts who they are talking to. Get an intro meeting set up with the head hunters, and they will start sending you relevant opportunities, assuming they like you.
I was in a similar situation as an IB analyst at a BB and had a friend, who was like-able and a top candidate for the mega funds cc me on warm email intro to the head hunters he was working with.
Thank you guys for the helpful responses! If I am the one reaching out, I would likely need to attach an updated resume in order to be taken seriously. However, only 4 months into the IB job, I feel like my resume could be much better if I waited until January/February. With this said, I do not want to be behind in the process, or give these headhunters the impression that I am not very interested, so is it worth sending the headhunters a preliminary draft of my resume with an intro e-mail even if it does not have the most impressive deals on it (currently 2 live midcap buysides and 1 buyside pitch)? I imagine I will have on shot to make an impression with my resume.
do you have any deals near term that you expect will progress, or just generally hoping that you will get more w/1-2 more months experience (the latter is reasonable btw, just asking..)?
regardless, suggest you feel around to see when recruiting is expected to kick off
no one knows for sure, but point is that if this year is expected to be an early (e.g., february-ish) start, should try to get out a resume soon. wouldn't worry too much if you don't have much to show at this point as most other first years will not either
I have one deal that is progressing (learning a lot about the company through the CIM and the due diligence process), one deal that is in the initial bid phase (not public information or CIM on the company, so hard to talk about during interviews without the deal going further and getting into some DD),one deal that is on hold due to buyer not wanting to overpay (but good analysis and info available from a CIM)
I guess I was just hoping with 1-2 months experience, I would progress in the deals and learn more about the companies, but I am coming to the obvious realization that I will probably not see anything else new beyond the above, so I might as well put my resume together now.
What makes you think it will be an early recruiting process? I have also read that it might be later this year and a HH also speculated during the summer that it might be later this recruiting cycle (late April). Thanks!
makes sense, good luck
was not saying I thought recruiting would be early, rather IF the buzz was for an early process..
thanks I guess the only benefit of waiting was that I would have a better idea of what deals would become live and which ones would die so I can do a better job choosing the right deals for my resume
Why not plan to do a 3rd year?
why not give recruiting a shot? lots of first years will not have solid deal experience 6 months in..
I will definitely give recruiting a shot. I am just trying to figure out the timing for sending in my resume, whether I should wait until I am ready for interviews with HHs or send in my e-mails/applications now. Friends in PE/who have received offers in PE are advising me to wait until I am ready, the reason being that there is no rush and that I only have one shot to get it right with HHs.
