Can someone please briefly explain to me the various fields within finance?

I am a newcomer to the world of finance and am still trying to figure out the difference between fields like S&T, securities, equities, fixed income, IBD, buyside, sellside, asset mgmt, etc.

I'm assuming IBD is the hardest to break in and the most well-paid at the entry level... but could someone please explain to me how all of these fields differ in terms of job description, skills required, and compensation?

Thanks!

Man, if only there were a way to search this website (or even the whole internet!) for basic information that has been discussed before. Maybe one day
