Can Summer Analysts expect at least one weekend off?

A few of my friends (non-bankers) are planning a summer trip. Assume we are in the office for Summer 21 SA, should I expect to work every weekend? If so, what is the usual workload for the summers during the weekend?

BAML doesn't let interns work weekends if you're headed there, but anywhere else you should expect to be in the office at least 1 day.

You may have 1-2 weekends where you don't have any work, but that is a Friday afternoon call and not something you can plan months in advance. If you book something now you should be prepared to cancel. Much easier to take one-off trips as a full time when you have vacation days, but interns typically don't leave unless for wedding/funeral

Honestly man it sucks but it shows a lot to be committed for the entire internship. I've had a few conversations with several senior bankers and they've all told me it reflects poorly if you can't commit yourself for less than 10 weeks, even virtually. If you need to bring a laptop and try to stay active, maybe you can swing it depending on how busy you are. The bank is committing a lot of resources to get you trained, it's a very unique opportunity you have, and it would suck to blow chances at a full time offer. Also, you're getting paid far more than any value you'd add over the summer, which in most cases would be negative anyways. Kids lined up behind you would kill for an SA to get a chance to convert, keep that in mind when making that decision.

We had an intern in my class this last summer who was MIA for 8 hours during a big pitch our group was working on, and people noticed and she ended up not receiving an offer due to the clear difference in workload across the interns. Not saying you can't catch a breather every once in a while, but a longer trip with friends wouldn't be possible full-time, so it's not acceptable during an SA stint either.
