Canada -> US Pipeline SA 2028

Curious of what's to be expected for Canadians recruiting for US SA in the upcoming cycle. In lieu of the TN visa drawbacks that happened last year:

1.) has anything materially changed? Or is the pipeline effectively still shut down.

2.) Is recruitment to the US from Canada even possible at this point in time?

3.) Which firms, if any,  still sponsor Canadians?

I think the most material change is Evercore no longer sponsoring Canadians on the TN as far as I’m aware, which impacts Western more so than other schools.

I think some banks like Moelis, LionTree, and GS are still on the table, all of which are highly competitive especially more so now given the Evercore fallout.

A few buyside seats at Ares, Blackstone, etc will likely still go to some Canadians too.

I think the best path to the US for now is applying for the shops that still take, while also focusing on the banks that are strong in Toronto and have a major US presence (some big 5) so that you can eventually transfer to one of their US offices.

Take all this with a grain of salt, this is just my opinion from what I’ve seen/heard/read.

Interesting. Would appreciate if you could share some of the bank names that still sponsor. To my knowledge, pretty much zero Canadians landed US offers last cycle.

GS TMT, Moelis SF/NYC, LionTree NYC, Greenhill NYC, Ardea, maybe PJT as well.

Again, take this with a grain of salt. I don’t think sponsorship has stopped cold-turkey, but it is under a lot more scrutiny right now. These things ebb and flow through time, from what I’ve seen it’s pretty cyclical. How things look now, are probably pretty different to how they’ll look in 2 years, 5 years, etc.

I think the best thing at this point is to focus on what you can control. Work hard, prep technicals, have good chats, be a good person, and hope things shake out in your favour.
