Canadian IB SA Hours

I’m an incoming IB summer analyst at one of the Canadian banks, and was wondering what kind of hours people usually work as an SA. I know the expectations for FT, but I'm not sure about interns?

Also unrelated, but how do y'all know when it's okay to go home / how to kill time if juniors are expected to wait around in the office for work?

appreciate any tips, especially from those who’ve survived it!!

Based on the most helpful WSO content, Canadian IB summer analysts can expect hours that are generally aligned with the full-time analysts, though there might be slight variations depending on the bank and deal flow. While full-time analysts in Canadian IB typically work long hours, ranging from 60-80+ hours per week depending on the workload, summer analysts often experience similar demands, especially during busy periods. However, there might be some leniency as interns are not always expected to shoulder the same level of responsibility as full-time employees.

Tips for Knowing When to Leave:

  1. Follow the Team's Lead: Observe when your team members, especially the junior analysts or associates, start wrapping up their day. It's usually a good indicator of when it's acceptable to leave.
  2. Check with Your Staffer or Buddy: If your bank assigns you a buddy or mentor, they can provide guidance on expectations for staying late or leaving.
  3. Stay Proactive: If you're waiting around for work, use the time to review materials, practice modeling, or prepare for upcoming tasks. This shows initiative and keeps you productive.

How to Kill Time While Waiting:

  • Learn the Systems: Familiarize yourself with the bank's tools, templates, and processes.
  • Ask for Feedback: Use downtime to ask for feedback on completed tasks or seek advice on improving your work.
  • Network: Build relationships with your team or other interns. Casual conversations can provide valuable insights and help you integrate into the culture.
  • Stay Available: Always be reachable and ready to jump on tasks, even during quieter moments.

Surviving the summer is about balancing hard work with smart time management. Stay engaged, proactive, and adaptable, and you'll make a strong impression!
