Based on the most helpful WSO content, here's what you need to know:
SIE Exam: While the SIE exam is a foundational finance exam and can be taken without sponsorship, it may not be the best use of your time as a freshman. Employers typically don't require it for internships, and most banks will pay for you to take it when you start full-time. Additionally, the SIE certification only lasts for four years, meaning you might need to retake it by the time you graduate. Instead, focusing on networking, learning technicals, or picking up skills like Python would be a better investment of your time.
CFA Level 1: Taking the CFA Level 1 as a freshman is generally not recommended. The CFA is a rigorous exam designed for professionals with some industry experience, and it requires a significant time commitment. Employers are unlikely to expect or prioritize this certification for internships, especially at your stage. Instead, prioritize maintaining a strong GPA, building relevant skills, and gaining practical experience through internships or extracurricular activities.
In summary, neither the SIE nor CFA Level 1 is likely to provide a significant advantage for a freshman. Focus on networking, technical skills, and practical experience to stand out to employers.

can’t register until senior year from my understanding
I can register for CFA level 1. I just need to be within 2 years of graduating which I am by my credits.
Won't help. Get an offcycle internship.
CFA is a ton of work, can't take as a freshman anyway, and also not relevant for IB (really mostly AM and ER that care about this) and the SIE is maybe 2-3 weeks of studying and just something you do before you start.
I am trying for an off cycle internship. I can get CFA as a freshman cuz I need to be within 2 years of graduating which I am.
For IB you'd still be much better off doing internships, no one in IB cares about CFA. If you want to do ER, sure give it a try
