Citi, BofA Among Most Hated Companies of 2010

It looks like GM and AIG have something to celebrate in the new year: they didn't make the list of 15 Most Hated American Companies of 2010. Unfortunately, Citi and BofA can't say the same. While the list is published in no particular order, BofA checked in at number 8 and was rated the worst bank of the year. Citi had its own public relations issues, thanks to a bevy of employee lawsuits and the perception of being the weak sister in the TARP parade, but BofA suffered more.

Bank of America also has received large amounts of negative press. There is a great deal of resentment among the public because of the bank’s bailout. In addition, there is Bank of America’s participation in mortgage “robo-signing” activity – a practice that rubber stamped home loan documents to allegedly short-circuit the foreclosure process. Bank of America recently settled with Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac with a $2.8 billion payment to cover bad mortgages sold to the agencies by one of the bank’s operations. Bank of America’s stock has significantly underperformed its rivals, certainly disappointing its investors.

Other notable entries on the list include Best Buy, BP, McDonald's, and both United and American Airlines. Satellite TV operators DirecTV and Dish Network both made the list, as did cable TV operator Charter Communications (note: I was a Charter customer for about 5 years and the service was utterly miserable. It seemed like my cable internet connection was out as often as it was working).

While I completely understand British Petroleum being on the list, I'm having a little trouble with McDonald's making the Top 15. Who doesn't love Mickey D's? Also, I get why AT&T is on the list because you guys go on and on about how poor the service is, but why Dell? I've purchased many computers from Dell over the years and they've been great.

So, which companies didn't make the list that should have? Anyone on the list you don't agree with?
