Citi GAM group

Hello, I have an informational interview with members of the GAM group in Citi. I looked online and found they cover asset managers like pension funds, sovereign wealth funds, private equity firms, etc. Does anyone know what kind of transactions they usually work on? Also, how would they differ from the Sponsors group? And this is definitely a stupid question, but why would a pension fund or sovereign wealth fund need the services of an investment bank?
