Citi Groups
What groups are recommended for Citi? Top groups appear to be Global Asset Management (fin sponsor), M&A, Industrials, and Media and Telecom. Has this changed? Are there preferences between these groups and what reasons drive these preferences?
I think it depends on you. They are all good groups, but you should choose according to what you like the most.
Any other groups you would consider to be well regarded?
This is patently bad advice. Group placement mostly determines your analyst experience and the opportunities you will have after your analyst experience. "What you're interested in" is not the most important factor. With the exception of Goldman and elite boutiques, product groups (M&A, LevFin & sponsors) are usually the best at the big banks. They give the most rigorous experiences and best opportunity set.
There are good industry groups as well - but these vary by bank.
Any guidance into the good industry groups at Citi?
M&A/Industrials/RE/FIG seem to be the top groups from what I hear.
FIG doesn't recruit from target schools nor participates in placement day.
Yeah, I believe it's mostly through networking on your own. Can't confirm the target school thing, but their recruiting process is separate for some reason.
i think that makes sense. They should recruit people who really want to be in FIG, rather from the pool of FT/interns who generally want to experience more standard industry/M&A groups. I think this should be the case for Real Estate groups too.

Why do you keep bumping this thread? Choose whichever group interests you the most (assuming you have a choice) and roll with it.

Citi - Best/most prestigious groups? (Originally Posted: 09/19/2006)
Anyone know which are the best/most prestigious groups at Citi? I heard that M&A and C&R are pretty good. Is that true? Also, how good is their FSG? Is there any way to see league tables specific to groups?
Communications Group is pretty good, I heard.
M&A, FIG, Com
Isn't the Prop Desk always the most prestigious area of any IB?
the prop desk is the shit
pure ballers
In IBs, if you move to the Prop Desk can you still rise through the usual ranks: Analyst, Associate, VP, MD ...etc?
What do they call someone then? Would they say "he's a VP in Prop Desk"?
"He's a VP on the prop desk."
Comm's good at Citi, as is M&A and Consumer.
"Would they say 'he's a VP in Prop Desk'?"
They would probably say, "He's a trader."
Further delineate as a "prop trader."
