Client Analyst to IB Associate?
Was just offered a Client Analyst(client service) position at a BB….Will this eventually allow me to move to a more "prestigious" part of the bank?
How are the exit ops?
I don't come from a target school or anything so this was the best I could manage.
I'd prefer blunt honesty
No to the first question, and next to none to the second question. It's a shitty role.
Have you ever heard of someone parlaying their Client Service role at GS or MS into an IB role at a boutique firm? Where do they usually work afterwards?
No. They usually move to other roles within wealth management / client service.
Any other thoughts about this?
"It's easier to find a job when you have a job" has always been the thought I've followed. Having said that, you might have to work your ass off to move anywhere else. Might be bad advice, but I've always liked getting a paycheck while looking.
So it sounds like it’s not a good position to get in at, although it’ll still pay the bills.
You're just going to have to take an additional step to explain why you want to move to an IB role. Secondarily, I highly doubt you'd hop into an associate role, you would likely slot into an analyst class. The move to IB is not impossible, especially if you do good work and network internally - but it will be very difficult.
Would love to hear more thoughts about this my WSO colleagues
