Columbia SEAS vs College?
Looking to do IB after college and Columbia is one of the schools I'm applying to. I've only recently heard about SEAS and I see that they have lots of finance-type courses. I was wondering if there would be any significant difference in applying to either the college or SEAS? Currently, I'm planning to apply for the Financial Economics major in the college. I've never been very strong at the sciences (physics, chem, etc.) and its not something that really interests me, but I was wondering how much of that would I have to do in SEAS if I chose something like the MSOR program with Finance & Management concentration.
beefsupreme24, bummer your thread hasn't had a response yet. Sometimes bots are smarter than humans anyways:

If those topics were completely useless, don't blame me, blame my programmers...
Columbia grad here. The financial econ major is BS and imo is more trouble than it's worth. I studied international relations and placed better than people I knew in financial econ because I networked better. The SEAS kids on the other hand.... they definitely seemed to do better than the those at CC. Engineering degrees hold pretty serious weight. I personally wasent smart enough to get a CS or engineering degree but if you believe you are than you 100% should do it. It will hold more weight for recruiting not only in finance but in many other sectors as well.
Would caution about ensuring that you can actually handle it well if you do SEAS. It's not worth it if your sacrificing your GPA significantly
Yes, should have mentioned this in my post above. No one wants poor students period, regardless of what you study. Despite what I believe most would say there IS room in the job market for underwater basket weaving majors IF you come from an Ivy and you have a high GPA. But the same can also be said for CS and Enginnering students. Only the best ones get the best offers. I chose IR because I enjoyed it and actually want a career in that field one day, despite doing banking now, AND because I knew I could absolutely crush the coursework.
