Conflict of Interest?
Wanted to ask here before I took any action to get some thoughts. I recently got staffed on a pitch for a company that my dad is a franchisee for (he doesn't work for them directly, but he owns/operates several stores as his own company). Is this something that I have to disclose to my firm? If so, do I tell compliance first or my direct manger? For more context, we don't have the deal yet, but will be pitching in the near future.
My uncle is a franchisee for a brand/company/franchisor I worked with during my stint in IB.
In my case it was indeed a conflict of interest. A conflict of interest may come up if an individuals personal interests may collide with your business interests towards your client, employer, or a third party.
Here, your relationship to your family member may be able to influence your ability to make sound judgements towards your client. Or if said plans of the franchisor may have a detrimental effect on i.e. franchisees, partner firms or investors - you may be in a situation where your family member could have severe disadvantages if you wouldn't tell him about these upcoming changes.
I am not saying you will do any of these things, but an impartial view is more difficult if direct relatives are involved.
To be on the safe side, I would have a chat with your own compliance team before agreeing on next steps.
