Contact Goodwill

Hey guys,

Here's the scenario: I have been exchanging emails with an alum for a few months and when summer recruiting came around, I asked him if he could help, and he apparently sent a referral to HR for me to be interviewed. I got the call and was told it was for the Finance division of a BB. I don't know too much about him other than his rank (pretty high) and just assumed he worked in the investment banking division. However, with this referral, I am assuming he works in the finance division. The HR contact who I spoke to said that if I wanted to interview for IBD, I would have to get another referral from my alum for IBD.

Do you guys think it would be too much to ask for a referral for IBD? I'm grateful for the Finance interview, esp in this market, but if it's not too far of a stretch, I would much rather interview for IBD.

Thoughts? Should I just try to nail the interview, get the offer, and try to apply for IBD when full time recruiting comes around?

Thanks

i would take the following approach:

ask him for the reference to IBD, but state that you are interested in both areas and want to improve your chances of landing an offer by i nterviewing with both departments

this seems like a good way to get the IBD reference without seeming completely uninterested in the finance side

now, if for some reason you are not allowed to interview with both groups, he is going to ask you which one is of more interest to you....in this case have a few tidbits lined up on why you are a better fit for IBD rather than the finance group. ie: i like the transaction nature of the business, i want to build modeling skills, etc. but be sure not to go overboard and offend your contact whose job doesn't have these components.
