Corporate Banking recruiting in Canada & Lateral to IB

Posting here as there is no separate forum for CB.

I’ve always wanted to work in PE, but I wasn’t serious during my first two years of university, failed a few classes, and now my GPA is in a place where I know IB in Canada, let alone the US, is out of reach straight from undergrad. Because of that, I’m now looking at corporate banking as a potential way to lateral into IB after a couple years. I have completed an internship in it although unstructured where I worked with credit memos so I do find the work somewhat interesting.

How realistic is this path? I’ve heard that at some Big 5 banks in Canada, CB often sits under Capital Markets and I’m wondering if that actually makes it easier to move over internally.

I’m also trying to get a sense of how competitive CB recruiting is compared to IB... is there still a heavy emphasis on transcript and grades, or do they not ask? Does the CB recruiting timeline follow the same accelerated schedule as IB, or is it slower and more ad hoc?

For my goal to lateral into IB, would it make more sense to target CB roles at the Big 5, or try for a global bank’s CB team? Would my transcript still bog me down if I try to transfer internally? I also noticed MUFG has an “Investment & Corporate Banking Analyst” role. Is that really IB?

Is it possible to get into US banks’ CB teams straight from undergrad in Canada, do they sponsor?

Ultimately, would it easier to lateral to IB from CB in Canada or the US?

I know this is a lot of questions but not familiar with the industry at all I have spent the past years learning exclusively about IB, SWFs and PE. Will greatly appreciate any answers. Thanks in advance.
