Corporate banking to investment banking
I am recent graduate working in corporate banking doing a 2 year rotational program at a large regional bank. Currently, I am with leveraged finance and have been seeing a lot of action there since I started. This team is underwriting execution primarily for PE sponsored transactions in the MM, although highly levered deals across the bank also come to this team for underwriting. It’s been a great experience as deal flow has been pretty solid up to this point, and I have learned a lot not only about credit underwriting, but also structuring transactions, and syndication. Although at the end of this year I will be switching to TMT credit for 6 months as part of the rotational program. The job mostly entails underwriting and portfolio management. I am told that the work flow is a bit less intense than lev fin. It’s mostly portfolio monitoring and 1-2 underwrites a month give or take. However, the TMT vertical is a strong group at this bank as they are typically leading deals in the MM, so I am sure during my time there that I will be able to learn a lot about the industry. After that rotation with TMT, then as part of the program we are suppose to work in the LOB side in one of the industry verticals at the bank.
I enjoy lev fin a lot and frankly do not want to leave. As far as I have been told, I have been doing a good job there but the program requires that I rotate, and frankly the team staffed up a lot of juniors since I started, so positions may be filled going into the next year. Additionally, I worry that the work will not be nearly as engaging or demanding in the corporate industry verticals compared to the lev fin product group.
I was wondering if there are any thoughts on moving from corporate banking to investment banking, especially considering someone such as myself with 6 months experience in lev fin and 6 months experience in TMT credit. Also curious what type of jobs would be the most fitting matching that experience. As far as I know, people can make the switch from corporate banking to investment banking, although it is not easy. So is there anything I should be doing now to prepare for that? Or things I need to do to make that a reality? Not really interested in going back to school or taking the CFA but open to suggestions.
Thanks

It’s a definitely possible - without needing to get an MBA or complete your CFA designation. I would network with the investment bankers at the bank you’re already at… having solid technicals and networking well (I.e., being likeable) will help you the most.
