"Corporate & Investment Banking" Analyst - Why?

Why do people like to put this down? Like if you're in IB you put down IB this is the equivalent of saying GS/UBS/MS. This it technicality-maxxing so hard Like you're a corporate banker or in S&T what is even the goal of trying to fool someone you're in IB.

Brother I am in CB… this is so true. Always the same insecure people just trying to graft an extra modicum of prestige onto their profile. You sell RCFs and treasury solutions and occasionally support the DCM team with small bits and pieces… everyone knows what corporate banking is just say it with your chest!

Think about it this way. These groups are named Corporate and Investment Banking. CIB Analyst is your stated title. It’s on the offer letter.

So, on your resume and LinkedIn, do you put the title of the position listed on your offer? Or do you go out of your way to change your position title, all because you think you have to satisfy the wits of an investment banker with a superiority complex?

Who cares bro. As an ASS 1 in a BB IB group, IB has much less prestige than you think anyway, although you will be amongst the highest paid (if not the highest) in your friend group/social circle.

If you went to some shitty school sure. At the Ivy League and other target schools, these quant and MLE kids are graduating with $300k+ offers. Not just one or two per school either. Know multiple people in my senior class—normal kids, not quiet nerds—with offers for $500k+ in quant. $300k+ in ML/AI. IB isn’t what it used to be, and it’s no longer the top choice for smart kids looking to make a lot of money.

I agree w you about prestige, but am just saying this to push back on the among-highest-paid-in-friend group idea. Seems like IB comp is actually at most the “normal earnings” amongst grads who are entering industry right after college. Obviously much higher than the median American and we’re all incredibly lucky

a lot of tears in the comments but I agr. obvs if ur actual job title is “corporate and investment banking analyst” then u can put that more often than not their job title specifically is corporate banking but they put corporate and investment banking because a lot of banks group the two divisions together so they’re not TECHNICALLY lying but it’s still goofy asf. almost as bad as putting “analyst at GS” when you’re in one of their random irrelevant non-IB teams  lolz

Yea I'm not saying its incorrect its technicality-maxxing on overdrive in order to put "investment banking" in your title. And I'm like why, it takes 10 seconds in a convo to confirm you're a corporate banker or in S&T which are still geniunely great roles so fuck anyone telling me I got a superiority complex, but like why couldn't you just say that. I'm curious if there is any tangible benefit to it cuz it seems ego-driven esp if your title is one or the other (vast majority of them). If anything I'm calling out that its goofy and comes off as insecure and now I got hella corporate bankers proving me right. Some commercial banks are merged with their investment banks same shit if someone put "Commercial & Investment Banking Analyst" on their resume like bro obviously you're a commercial banker who u tryna fool? A freshman in college?

IB is broad, but S&T and corporate banking are different roles. Being specific makes more sense than blurring the lines..

I agree with this wholeheartedly. My bank calls it’s IB division something other than IB and I deliberately use that weird title. Have even been asked if I’m in middle office before — real aurafarming is acting like you don’t even care.

Why is everyone so mad? It’s true.

Nothing is more cringe than using the broadest terminology possible to cling to a little bit of prestige. It’s the same here with Big 4 interns describing their roles as “Deal Advisory” instead of “Transaction Services” or “Financial Due Diligence.” Everyone has to go through the internship grind, but it’s always the interns in less competitive roles clinging to these labels to LARP.

Did 3y in corporate banking or “Corporate & Investment Banking” before m&a so qualified to answer this:

1) in banks which function as CB CIB vs. banks which function as basic CB, the job is relatively different. In CB CIB you work, structure, originate… on products which are often treated as ‘IB’. This includes LBOs, fund finance, acq finance etc. (basically just the financing side). Additionally, you tend to work closely with actual IB products; cap markets and M&A. Vs. ‘Basic CB’ which is pretty much just IG debt, transaction banking, and other simple treasury products. If you’re staffed in the former, I’d say it’s reasonable to make the distinction between the functions by calling it CIB.

2) it’s on the offer letter - idk what grad/analyst offer letters look like for IB teams but when I was in CB, the job is corporate & investment banking analyst. Further at my bank that’s what we were internally - on org charts, email signatures etc.

3) I’d say this is the main reason - gets you more hits on LinkedIn. Some banks will look for an levfin banker or fund finance banker and treat these roles as an “investment banking analyst” role. Putting CIB in your LinkedIn may get you hits for these recruiters - not 100% sure how much benefit it actually provides though

As a 3rd year analyst in TB / CB myself, how'd you make the transition?

Prestige fishing on hinge is arguably worse (honorable mention to people in ops putting down IB as their job)

mo monke mo problems
