Cover Letters for SA 27?

I'm a sophomore at a target school, and I was wondering if anyone has any insight into the importance of cover letters for SA 27 recruiting. Very few firms have it required and most have it optional, but how important is it to have a really high quality cover letter, or is it more so just a formality. Also was wondering if banks screen cover letters for AI use, since putting my thoughts and the notes from my chats into an LLM and having it make a cover letter seems like the most efficient way to write one.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, cover letters for SA (Summer Analyst) recruiting are generally seen as a formality, especially for investment banking roles. Here's what you need to know:

Importance of Cover Letters:

  1. Optional vs. Required: If a firm marks the cover letter as optional, it’s often not a critical factor in the decision-making process. However, submitting one can show extra effort and attention to detail, which might give you a slight edge.
  2. Screening Process: Many recruiters skim cover letters briefly, primarily to check for glaring errors, typos, or inconsistencies. They rarely spend significant time analyzing them unless something stands out (positively or negatively).
  3. Value Add: A well-crafted, concise cover letter can help if it highlights specific connections to the firm (e.g., alumni chats, networking) or demonstrates a clear understanding of the role and your fit. However, it’s unlikely to make or break your application unless your resume is borderline.

Tips for Writing a High-Quality Cover Letter:

  • Keep It Short: Recruiters prefer brevity. Use bullet points (no more than three) to outline why you want the role, why you’re a good fit, and any unique value you bring.
  • Personalization: Mention specific people you’ve spoken to or insights you’ve gained about the firm. This shows genuine interest and effort.
  • Professional Formatting: Use a clean, professional font and ensure there are no grammatical errors. A polished appearance matters.
  • Focus on Experience: Highlight relevant past work or skills rather than generic traits like being a "hard worker" or "team player."

AI-Generated Cover Letters:

  • AI Screening: While there’s no widespread evidence that banks actively screen for AI-generated content, it’s crucial to ensure the final product feels authentic and personalized. AI tools can help structure your thoughts, but you should refine the output to reflect your voice and specific experiences.
  • Efficiency: Using an LLM (Large Language Model) to draft a cover letter can save time, but don’t rely on it entirely. Recruiters can often spot generic or overly polished language that doesn’t align with your resume or background.

Final Thoughts:

Cover letters are unlikely to be the deciding factor for SA roles, but they can serve as a tie-breaker or a way to stand out if done well. If you’re short on time, prioritize perfecting your resume and networking efforts, as these carry more weight in the recruiting process. However, if you choose to submit a cover letter, make it count by keeping it concise, error-free, and tailored to the firm.
