Coworker Constantly Making Mistakes and Not Pulling Their Weight
Hey guys, curious on whether you guys have ever worked with a coworker who does not pull their weight.
I recently transferred from REIB to a MM firm in a second tier city. I've been working in my current role as a senior analyst for the past 7-8 months and have noticed that my coworker/other analyst does the minimal amount of work necessary. If we're tasked on an assignment or deal, my coworker does NOT pull his weight at all.
I've heard mixed feedback on what to do in situations like this but I am near the end of my straw. I've talked it over calmly with my coworker more than 10-20 times on fixing errors/typos and simple mistakes that he makes but he refuses to double check or triple check his work. He puts in the absolute minimum effort whether it's on financial modeling, working on pitch decks or any other analysis or tasks we have to complete. Have you guys ever been in a similar situation? I'm honestly shocked that he was hired for this role but I think the MDs already know that he messes up constantly. I'm beyond annoyed and venting because I don't want to make this situation any worse than it already is. He literally refuses to learn from his mistakes even after the 50th time working on a deck or spreadsheet. Most of his mistakes stem from not double checking his work and I believe he rushes everything so he can relax and not work for the rest of the day. He also complains about work we receive from our staffer because we have "so much work" when he barely even completes most projects/deals he works on. I'm constantly covering for his mistakes and fixing his errors even though he promises to do better. I think he has 100% taken advantage of WFH and is not doing shit most of his work day. I've talked to him countless times about double checking his work, to stop making dumb mistakes, but I swear this kid does not learn. Anyone been in a similar position?
tldr: Venting about coworker who does NOT pull his weight at all. Constantly making mistakes, does not double check his work, and complains when our staffer gives us work to complete.
Are you his boss/Direct report? If not , I don't think you have a lot you can do except not cover for him. I would suggest going to your boss and asking for separate projects to try and stand out . Then you will have leverage for an early promote / responsibility.
On the separate note, Make sure you check yourself before you wreck yourself. This has happened to my roommate where he is to high strung/harsh and people absolutely refuse to work with him. He's in Corp Fin, so it might be a little different. His work product was good as I have seen it before, but he still dug his own grave as he developed a "bad" reputation at his firm.
agreed, sounds like op might be a person hard to work with
Not sure how you got that from my post.... even my coworkers and bosses know that he messes up constantly but they have told him countless times to fix his errors and he refuses to...
Sounds like you have done what you can to help.
Unless he reports to you, it’s his manager’s responsibility to performance manage this person.
#REF his ass with an aluminum baseball bat the next time he screws up
Believe it or not there are a ton of incompetent analysts out there. I don’t see how ratting on him will work in your favor. Basically no one gets let go early as an analyst unless you do something illegal basically. I think you run the risk of coming of as a bad teammate depending on how you approach this. The rest of the team probably already knows this, and he’ll be gone when he doesn’t get promoted or gets another gig.
I worked on a small team at my first gig and had 2 analysts that refused to work late and constantly made the same mistakes and never put anything to memory (always asking the same questions). Me and another analyst were always annoyed because it created extra work for us. But at the end of the day there’s nothing you can really do as another analyst. I think going to your sr bankers and complaining does nothing but reflect poorly on you unfortunately (they know who is and isn’t going the extra mile and there isn’t anything they can do either other than low bonuses and not promote when the time comes). I think you’re just going to have to ride this one out until he leaves
There are some analysts who are garbage. Complain to your asso or VP but not a lot else you can do. You'll probably have to pick up more slack on this one.
